Most system components have the capability of sending hundreds
of state events during normal operation. OSEM is
designed to filter these component events and only notify
customers and/or HP Services when action needs to be taken
to resolve or prevent an outage.
The customer systems are set up to forward Simple Management Network Protocal (SNMP) traps to
a OSEM host. The host will analyze the trap for any important
service information. OSEM may gather more information from
the managed system to further diagnose the problem. This service
information then can be sent to a local email account or back
to Hewlett-Packard using Instant Support Enterprise Edition (ISEE). A service notification, in the form of a special
SNMP trap, is also generated so that enterprise management
applications can receive them. In the case of HP System Insight Manager (HP SIM), it
automatically recognizes these traps by default and displays
them in its event list as service notifications along with
recommended service actions.
