Key Benefits

The HP ProLiant BL Line offers the industry's broadest portfolio of blade servers and technologies optimized to address customers' needs across data center, service provider and telco environments.
»  Four Xeon processors, hot-plug SCSI drives, and redundant SAN capability provide for a "no compromise" server blade which adapts effortlessly into the existing p-Class environment
»  Designed with back-end enterprise availability in mind through two (2) PCI-X slots for redundant SAN connectivity
»  Perfect solution for back-end enterprise and database applications that require maximum computing power and robust high availability features
»  The intelligent p-Class infrastructure reduces today's operational costs and protects your future investment

Mission critical protection

Four Xeon processors, hot-plug SCSI drives, and redundant SAN capability provide for a "no compromise" server blade which adapts effortlessly into the existing p-Class environment

Protect your mission critical server information using intelligent fault-resilient power, redundant SAN connectivity, integrated RAID, intelligent fault-resilient power and hot-plug SCSI drives

  • The ProLiant BL40p has two PCI-X slots for redundant SAN connectivity and is optimized for use with HP StorageWorks products. In addition, the BL40p will be compatible with some 3rd party SAN products.
  • Four universal hot-plug SCSI hard drives offer up to 587 GB capacity, connected to the next-generation SCSI Smart Array 5i Plus controllers with Ultra3 performance and battery-backed write cache. Embedded into the server blade, the Smart Array 5i Plus Controller provides worry-free data protection for all server blade internal storage needs. The back-end server blade supports data protection through RAID 5 (parity and data striping).
  • The ProLiant BL40p is fully compatible with all existing and future components of the p Class system (server enclosures, interconnect switches, power enclosures, bus bars, and cabling). The p-Class power distribution system is right-left redundant: The right side, or "A" side, is a mirror image of the left, or "B" side, when facing the rear of the rack. Each side has its own AC feed and DC distribution path. The shared power supplied through the 3U power enclosures is divided between the B-side bus bar and the A-side bus bar for complete redundancy. If one side experiences a power interruption, the other side is designed to handle the entire system load without threatening customer availability.

Maximum computing power

Designed with back-end enterprise availability in mind through two (2) PCI-X slots for redundant SAN connectivity

  • Each server blade includes up to four 2.0GHz\1M iL3, 2.8GHz\2M iL3, 2.2GHz\2M iL3, or 3.0GHz\4M iL3 Intel Xeon MP processors with 400-MHz system bus
  • Two PCI-X slots (64-bit/100MHz) for redundant SAN connectivity
  • Six DIMM slots have a maximum capacity of 12GB of PC2100, ECC SDRAM. Server blades feature 2 x 1 interleave memory for added performance. DIMMs must be added in pairs
  • Each server blade has five embedded NC7780 10/100/1000T Gigabit Ethernet network adapters with WOL (Wake on LAN) and Pre-boot eXecution Environment (PXE) to provide maximum bandwidth, plus one 10/100T connection dedicated to iLO

Intelligent infrastructure

The p-Class intelligent infrastructure reduces operational costs and protects your future investment

Protect your investment with a flexible forward-compatible infrastructure that can accommodate future blades with SAN support.

  • ProLiant BL p Class 2P and 4P server blades can fit into 6U server blade enclosures and can be mixed in the same enclosure
  • Power headroom was designed into the p-Class architecture to accommodate future processors so there is no need to repurchase power infrastructure for the next generation of blades
  • SAN support is available on this 4P blade as well as the current generation performance 2P blade

Dynamically adapt as your business needs change by adding compute power with the snap of a blade

  • Once infrastructure is in place, server blades can be installed in seconds and are ready for automated provisioning
  • Single-sided easy access to most pluggable components
  • Dynamic scaling add more server blades or power supplies without powering down the system

Innovative design cuts cabling up to 80% compared to traditional 1U servers

  • The ProLiant BL p-Class GbE Interconnect Switch Kit is designed to consolidate network cables within the server blade enclosure to a more manageable quantity. They provide additional convenience by consolidating up to 32 network connections into as little as a single cable per server blade enclosure.
  • Designed for headless management no keyboard, video, or mouse cables
  • Fewer power cables centralized hot-plug power provides power cable consolidation

Cable savings comparing blades to comparably configured traditional 4P server

Dynamic resource scaling

Quickly respond to changing business needs through dynamic resource scaling and virtual presence and control.

Secure virtual presence from anywhere in the world using Integrated Lights Out Advanced with built-in graphic console and virtual media

  • HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) advanced functionality ships standard on every ProLiant BL p-Class server blade. In addition to full graphical access to the host server's display, keyboard, and mouse, the advance functionality also includes virtual CD and floppy capability. Preboot execution environment (PXE) technology enhances remote access by installing and configuring operating systems to boot remotely

Take total control with a visualization tool that keeps a pulse on total rack status with graphical location detail

  • Insight Manager 7 is an easy-to-use, flexible, scalable and secure solution for managing hp servers, desktops, workstations, and portables. It provides rapid access to detailed fault and performance information.
  • Insight Manager 7 provides visualization of all blades at an enclosure and rack level for ProLiant BL blade servers (see illustration)

Deploy and redeploy hundreds of blades by simply dragging and dropping predefined scripts and images with ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack

  • Configure 2-100 server blades in 30 minutes using multicasting
  • Pre-configure the server blade enclosure bay before the blade is inserted server blades configure automatically when plugged in
  • Rip and replace replace one blade with a new blade and server role is automatically restored to new blade
